Having spent more than 12 years helping startups and product companies to outsource software development in DC area we decided that it’s time to process all this data that we gathered and put together a report to help better understand the local market of tech companies. Wondering how did we get all these numbers and fancy pie-charts?
Data for the first section was pretty easily taken from LinkedIn and Indeed.
For the second section for active candidates we used data from one of the most popular web-sites among information technology and engineering professionals Dice. There is no easy way to calculate the number of all active candidates so we calculated the total number of users within 50 miles of Tysons on Dice and LinkedIn and multiplied it by rate so it can be compared with passive candidates on LinkedIn. What is passive? Everyone on LinkedIn!
Section “Companies by technology” was built using subset of DC companies from our internal database that includes thousands of companies. Only private product-oriented software development companies were taken into consideration. None of government contractors or private consultants were included.
For the technology popularity determination section we used TIOBE Index . It is a measure of popularity of programming languages, calculated from number of search engine results for queries containing the name of the language. Index covers searches in Google, Google Blogs, MSN, Yahoo!, Baidu, Wikipedia and YouTube and is updated once a month. Very intelligent thing!
